Drug Discovery

Further development of the drug discovery cluster, led by the Biomedical Chain

The Kansai area has accumulated the most advanced research organizations on life science, along with Japan's leading pharmaceutical companies in northern Osaka (Saito). In this innovative environment, "Saito Bio Hills" evolved as an internationally competitive cluster. In the field of drug discovery, universities, companies, venture companies and companies on the rise take on important roles. Among these are included research institutions such as Osaka University, the National Cardiovascular Center, the National Institute of Biomedical Innovation, and the Osaka Bioscience Institute, as well as major pharmaceutical companies such as Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co. Ltd., Shionogi & Co. Ltd., and Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation. They are the nucleus in the practical applications of the fundamental research and act as leverages in inducing further research to create a "biomedical chain" capable of achieving our vision of a breakthrough in drug discovery. The Osaka area will contribute to the overall mission of Biomedical Cluster Kansai by approaching the following issues:

Regenerative Medicine and Lifestyle Diseases

A Medical Innovation System Providing New Medical Treatment and Scientific Health Care

In the Kobe region, the Institute of Biomedical Research and Innovation (IBRI) takes the lead in the mission for the actualization of regenerative medical treatment, and in research for the treatment and prevention of lifestyle-related diseases. The first stage of the Knowledge Cluster Initiative project involved extensive participation by Kansai area research institutions and enterprises in the pursuit of developing technologies towards the practical application of regenerative medical treatments and other advanced medical treatments. A translational research structure was developed in this pursuit, where clinical applications and discoveries were pooled as knowledgeable resources and then later used for commercialization. In the second stage of the project, we continue to focus on the advanced medical treatment of lifestyle-related diseases and regenerative medicine. In establishing a "medical innovations system" we can provide safe and reliable medical services as well as assist in the provision of scientific health care. The Kobe area will contribute to the overall mission of Biomedical Cluster Kansai by approaching the following issues:
